“Our shredded food was released at the 2009 APPA show, and we’ve now developed our pates to compliment this segment,” says Doak Porter, president of Performance Pet Products. “We are continuing line extensions within our label and continue to add to our product offering of treats and chews.”
Due to the recent pet food recalls, pet owners and retailers have been faced with food quality and safety concerns. “We take these concerns very seriously,” says Porter. “That’s why we have built a plant in Mitchell, S.D., that is devoted to the production of human-grade dog and cat food from the highest quality ingredients available.”
Porter explains that every step of the production process–from obtaining the raw ingredients to the processing at the organic, EU-approved and FDA-certified plant–is carefully and solely controlled by the company. “Our products contain only the highest quality American ingredients available, ensuring the health and safety of our animal companions.”
In light of these recalls, retailers should make sure they are shelving only high-quality consumables. “Retailers should also know whether or not the company they are doing business with has a protocol for a recall; and if so, it should be available to them,” says Porter. “We perform mock recalls on a weekly basis to ensure we are expedient with our requirements and the procedures outlined by the FDA.”
Performance Pet Products offers other services to retailers as well. “We provide high-end graphics, shelf talkers, point-of-purchase materials, display trays and boxes,” says Porter. “We also have catalogs and links on our website that educate retailers about our products.”
In addtion, the company offers partnership packaging to companies that would like to produce high-end, custom, private-label pet foods using its resources.
