BEAK Declares National Pet Bird Day

The Bird Enjoyment & Advantage Koalition (BEAK), a concentrated effort to educate on and grow responsible bird ownership, named Sept. 17, 2019 as the first ever National Pet Bird Day.

 

BEAK invites pet bird owners to share stories and photos of their birds using the hashtag #NationalPetBirdDay. There is also a downloadable toolkit for anyone interested in helping BEAK spread the word about the joys and benefits of bird ownership.

 

“Birds are oftentimes overlooked since many pet owners opt for a larger, four-legged companion,” said Dean Reyes, president of BEAK. “Through National Pet Bird Day, we hope more people explore the option of adding a pet bird to the family as they are just as affectionate and enjoyable as their furry counterparts.”     

 

According to the American Pet Products Association’s 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, 5 percent of U.S. households own a bird, equating to 5.7 million households. Of these bird owners, the most cited benefit associated with owning a bird is that pet birds are fun to watch and have in the house, followed by the benefit of birds bringing love and companionship to their owners.    

 

“Pet birds bring happiness, color and life into their owner’s home,” said BEAK chairman Brent Weinmann. “Whether they’re singing a song, playing in their cage or resting on your shoulder, pet birds offer social interaction and stimulation when you need it.”   

 

National Pet Bird Day also encourages people to consider the responsibilities and commitment that come with getting a companion bird. Those looking for the right bird for their lifestyle can take a myBird quiz. Quiz questions range from time and financial commitments, living arrangements and noise tolerance, to birds’ level of affection and expected lifespan; all key factors for potential bird owners to consider. Since its inception, myBird has generated nearly 500,000 bird recommendations. The website also connects viewers to available birds and avian veterinary care facilities close to home.     

 

BEAK created National Pet Bird Day to continue the momentum of myBird’s social media efforts to reach bird lovers around the world. Over the span of three years, the campaign has garnered nearly 160,000 bird fans on Facebook and over 10,000 followers on Instagram. To promote the holiday on social media, myBird will share bird-related content leading up to and on National Pet Bird Day.
