Barkstrong Files for Bankruptcy

Published:

Less than a year after it made headlines with the acquisition of the Wild Calling! pet food brand, Calabasas, Calif.-based Barkstrong LLC (dba Zoic Pet) has filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy.

The company is represented by Steven A Alpert of Encinco, Calif., in the bankruptcy petition, which was filed on May 6. In addition to Wild Calling!, the company also acquired Great Life Petfood and Pioneer Naturals in 2018.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the filing came as a result of the death of Barkstrong owner A.K. Sands, whose family opted to dissolve the company through bankruptcy instead of continuing operations.

Wild Calling!—which was founded in 2012 by the Petersen family—was itself acquired out of chapter 11 bankruptcy by Barkstrong in May 2018. The company brought Wild Calling! together with Great Life Petfood and Pioneer Naturals to create a small stable of brands that were popular with independent pet retailers but had not yet achieved broad distribution, with the intention of bringing all three brands to national prominence.
