Celebrities Put Senior Pets in the Spotlight
With the holiday season being a time for charity, celebrities collaborated with The Grey Muzzle Organization to support the care and adoption of senior dogs. Comedy legends Carol Burnett, Bob Newhart, Carl Reiner and Lily Tomlin all starred in a public service announcement video in which they speak about the challenges of growing older.
“I’m 90, but I still feel like I am 30…except when I try to run,” Newhart says in the video.
The stars also spoke about how senior dogs deserve love too.
“Go out and adopt a senior dog,” Tomlin urges in the PSA. “They are amazing! And they will be so grateful.”
The video also highlighted the obstacles often faced by older animals. In addition to experiencing health issues associated with aging, many older dogs are surrendered to shelters once their owners pass away or can no longer handle the expense of their pets’ care. Elderly animals are also less likely to be adopted from shelters.
The Grey Muzzle Organization provides funding to programs, animal welfare groups and shelters that support making the lives of senior dogs easier. Grey Muzzle issues grants that support hospice care, senior dog adoption, medical screenings and the donation of products tailored to the needs of older canines, such as orthopedic beds.
Overall, the organization aims to give senior canines “the chance to live out their final years, months or days with dignity, grace and a happy smile on their face,” Tomlin says in the video.
The charity group hopes that its celebrity video will boost awareness about the difficulties faced by older dogs and promote senior adoption.
“Thanks to these legendary stars, more people will learn about at-risk senior dogs,” says Grey Muzzle’s executive director Lisa Lunghofer.
