Champion Petfoods Introduces ACANA Singles
ACANA Singles, Champion Petfoods’ nutrition-forward answer to Limited Ingredient Diet (LID) needs, unveiled a formulation makeover and flavor additions at this year’s SuperZoo. Since its launch in 2010, ACANA has grown to become the LID category’s third best-selling brand; even with its purposefully limited distribution in independent pet specialty retail, veterinarian and online channels. ACANA Singles dog food business grew by more than 30 percent in 2017, according to GfK research.
Limited Ingredient Diet remains one of the fastest growing segments in premium pet food, with category volume up more than eight percent year on year. LID’s rapid rise continues due to a unique value proposition that answers two marketplace needs simultaneously: a dietary solution for pets with food sensitivities, and pet lovers’ growing interest in products with shorter, cleaner ingredient labels.
Contributing to this wave of retail category growth, ACANA is introducing improved, meat-enhanced Singles recipes and an expanded line featuring two new single animal-source protein flavors ̶ Beef & Pumpkin and Turkey & Greens. The brand is now carried in more than 3,700 independent pet specialty stores across the U.S., and currently owns 10 percent of the LID dry dog kibble product category in that channel.
Following guidance from pet lovers and retail partners, ACANA’s formulation improvement adds more high quality, fresh meat protein, while reducing the number of carbohydrates, and shortening the ingredient panel. ACANA Singles is intended to help healthy dogs with food sensitivities to more complex ingredient recipes.
“We are honoring our commitment to provide pets with healthier, higher-quality diets more appropriate to their nutritional needs by increasing the real meat ratio from 50 to 60 percent,” said Julie S. Washington, chief marketing officer of Champion Petfoods.
The Singles line meat ingredients are supplied by trusted farmers and ranchers near the company’s Auburn, Ky. DogStar Kitchens, the company’s state-of-the-art kitchen facility which opened in 2016. All of the Singles line products destined for American retail stores and Pet Lovers’ homes are made at the Kentucky kitchens.
ACANA Singles are regionally sourced, and made in appropriate WholePrey ratios of 70 percent rich muscle meat, 20 percent vitamin-and mineral-rich organ meats, and 10 percent cartilage and bone, which are rich in calcium and phosphorus.
