Max, Bella Hold Strong as Most Popular Puppy Names

America’s dog owners have not strayed from naming their new canine companions Max or Bella. For the ninth consecutive year, those names—for female and male puppies, respectively—topped Vetstreet.com’s Most Popular Puppy Names. While Max and Bella are mainstays in the No. 1 spot of most popular puppy names, Vetstreet.com did note some changes in the top 10.

In the male name category, there was a shift in the top five: Charlie moved into the No. 2 spot and Rocky climbed into the No. 3 spot. After eight consecutive years in the No. 2 spot, Buddy slipped to No. 4 on the list, and Cooper anchored the top five in its same spot. The name Jack hit the road, getting bumped out of the top 10 by Zeus, which landed in the No. 8 spot.

The name Luna for female puppies, which was 2013’s “name to watch,” broke into the top-10 list at No. 9. Bella, Daisy and Lucy have retained their spots as the top three names for female puppies once again. However, Sadie edged out Molly for the No. 4 spot on the list.
