Every Day is National Pet Day, Science Says
National Puppy Day 2016 may have come and gone, but fear not, National Pet Day is here. And although we don’t need an excuse to ruminate on the joys of pet ownership, it’s a perfect day to promote the positive impact that pets have on our lives and our health.
Most of us know firsthand the value pets bring to our lives, but fortunately for the entire pet-loving community, there is one particular organization that is working hard to back our experiential knowledge with actual science. The Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is funding, collecting and sharing scientific research that essentially proves how great pets are for people.
HABRI describes itself as a “rallying point and central hub for individuals, organizations and companies that share the common goal of enhancing broad understanding, education and adoption of the human-animal bond as a beneficial factor in human and animal health.” Its efforts are all in service of advocating for public policy that will support efforts to bring pets and people together.
HABRI Central, the organization’s online platform for sharing and generating research, is a great spot to visit for finding information on the ways in which pets are improving and even saving lives. The website is a virtual warehouse of magazine articles, videos, literature, conference papers, newspaper features and much more, all pertaining to the benefits of the human-animal bond.
I highly recommend checking out HABRI Central Briefs. Here you will find an assortment of peer-reviewed summaries on a range of subjects, including animal-assisted intervention for people suffering from depression, trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder, the use of therapy dogs in hospitals, and the cardiovascular-health benefits of having a pet.
As we at Pet Business have said before, every day is pretty much National Pet Day, but we encourage all in the industry to make the day an opportunity to further our education about the value of animals in our lives and the potentially life-saving effects of creating that human/animal bond. And be sure to share this information with your customers too.
