How Retailers Can Boost Their Pet Care IQ

In order to provide optimal customer service, retailers need to make sure they’re open to new knowledge. By being aware of changing trends and the latest research, they can be sure to be valuable sources of advice and information for their customers. Upcoming webinars developed by a partnership between the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and VetVine can be a way for retailers to educate themselves on pet care and wellness.

“These webinars feature leaders in the field of veterinary health research and offer practical advice on common health concerns, as well as information on cutting-edge research to benefit our dogs,” said a statement issued by the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

To access the webinars, retailers need to complete a free registration with VetVine. Each webinar can be watched live and includes a question and answer session. They can also be viewed on demand later on as well.

One of the upcoming presentations is entitled “What the Flu! Protecting Dogs and Communities from Canine Influenza Virus” and provides information on recognizing symptoms of this common illness as well as prevention techniques. The webinar description mentions the importance of understanding this sickness for pet businesses: “Outbreaks of CIV commonly result in many sick dogs, some of which can develop severe illness, and this can have financial and reputational repercussions on canine businesses and organizations.” For pet retailers that carry live animals, groomers, and dog kennels and daycares, these tips can be important in ensuring the pets they care for are healthy.

A webinar that aired on April 10 is already available for viewing. “An Update on the Science Behind CBD (Cannabidiol) Use for Pets” can help retailers understand how CBD affects dogs. With CBD becoming a frequent ingredient in pet products and a booming trend in the industry, retailers should know enough about it to educate their customers and explain how CBD products work.

Other webinars cover interesting topics in pet health such as the effect of maternal bonding on puppies and spaying/neutering practices.

By keeping an open mind to new information, retailers can step up the competitive advantage they have over impersonal big-box stores and online retailers. They can be an educational resource and provide caring customer service that demonstrates their enduring value.
