Profit & Loss in Las Vegas

As the pet industry gets ready to gather in Las Vegas next month for SuperZoo, I’m excited for what is shaping up to be the biggest and best edition of the show so far.

As you will read in the special SuperZoo Preview Guide that accompanies this issue of Pet Business, this year’s event, which will be held Aug. 20 - 22 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, has a lot to offer pet industry professionals. In addition to more than 1,100 exhibitors showcasing a wide variety of the latest and most innovative pet products—including over 850 items that will be making their debut at the show—SuperZoo will feature a broad lineup of educational sessions covering everything from pet CPR to managing social media effectively. And, let’s not forget all of the great opportunities to connect with colleagues from across the industry, whether it’s at the annual networking reception or the concert that the World Pet Association (WPA) hosts each year at the House of Blues—this year headlined by REO Speedwagon.

For more information about all of the exciting features lined up for this year’s SuperZoo, be sure to check out the SuperZoo Preview Guide, which includes a comprehensive schedule of events, including a full list of seminars, as well as valuable advice from WPA president Jacinthe Moreau on how to make the most of your time at the show, whether you’re an attendee or exhibitor.

While there is much to look forward to about SuperZoo 2019, I’m sorry to say that I won’t be able to do one of my favorite things at the show this year—visit with my friend Lance Reyniers.

The founder and president of Python Products Inc. passed away in April, and his presence will be sorely missed by many in the industry, myself included. An ardent supporter of the the aquatics segment, as well as the Made in the USA trend, Lance was a fount of knowledge and man with strong opinions and convictions. Yet, under what could sometimes initially be perceived as a gruff exterior, Lance was a big softy at heart—something that was clear to anyone who spent a little time with him. He had a generous spirit and found obvious joy in interacting with young people (watching him surprise children with a talking animatronic snake that he kept in his booth was particularly fun to watch). Lance was also a loving family man whose eyes lit up when he spoke about his children and grandchildren and who was almost always accompanied by his wife, Janet, at industry events.

For all of these reasons, and more, Lance was someone that I genuinely enjoyed speaking with at events like SuperZoo. Luckily, Janet is carrying on his legacy with Python Products, and I look forward to seeing her in Las Vegas. But the show—and the industry—won’t be the same without Lance.  PB
