The Royal Treatment
Under its ZYMOX brand, Pet King Brands offers a range of natural enzymatic products that have been used and recommended by veterinarians for years.
Pet King Brands offers a number of products under the brand name ZYMOX, which are formulated with natural enzymes to help manage many common health problems of pet’s ears, skin and mouth. While the products are somewhat new to retailers, they have enjoyed a long history of being used and recommended by veterinarians since 1998. The products have achieved such a tremendous following by pet owners that a great deal of company growth is due to the success of the products shared by word of mouth.
The Westmont, Ill.-based company has seen steady growth since its founding and has expanded its product offerings from one product to many. Initially, from being sold exclusively through veterinarians to offering its growing list of items through retailers, the company has recently launched a line of products with the same formulation, packaged for use on horses.
With its own veterinary research and development team on board, Pet King Brands has developed proven products with antibacterial, antifungal and anti-yeast properties. The ear and skin products have shown to be antibiotic alternatives, and the oral care line has proven superior in daily use and particularly beneficial to pets with special needs.
The dermatology line includes a topical cream and spray for itchy, allergic or infected skin, a shampoo and a conditioning rinse that can be used as a leave on for those pets that need extra itch relief, and two ear care products. The Enzymatic Ear Solution with .05% Hydrocortisone is the top seller and the product many pet owners have discovered works when no other products will. Products in Pet King’s oral care line are all brushless and includes a water additive, a breath freshening spray and a dental gel that works as brushless toothpaste.
The Pet King Brands story is about providing relief to pets suffering from problematic ears and skin, but it is also one of collaboration. Pet King Brands was started by Pamela Bosco, who owes the intellectual property accolades to her brother, a talented bioscientist who shared his patented enzyme technology. Michael Pellico is the developer of Biotene, the No. 1 dentist recommended line of oral care products for people suffering from a condition known as dry mouth. Dry mouth is the result of side effects from medications, chemotherapy and other health issues such as diabetes.
The patented LP3 Enzyme formula in all the ZYMOX products shares the same technology as Biotene, with additional improvements and modifications for use in dogs and cats. “Innovative products that actually work, are non-toxic and can be used easily on dogs and cats of any age,” Deborah Brown, vice president, says are the keys to the company’s success. There is nothing really like ZYMOX in the market. “These products work, and we have a long list of customer testimonials sharing how well they work,” she adds. “The reputation the products have earned is really humbling. The impact they have had on pets’ makes our jobs so rewarding.”
Brown suggests retailers create a dedicated dermatology section to become more of a “pharmacy” that provides one-stop shopping for all pet needs. “We offer retailers several displays to do just that,” Brown says. “They are eye-catching, designed to draw the shopper to the section, and feature educational material to make [pet owners] aware of the products and their benefits.” The floor display holds 24 products, and there are other options for retailers with limited space.
Brown also stresses that retailers must be educated about common health conditions and how to counsel pet owners. The company offers training options and various educational materials to teach store personnel about the products and their benefits. “We understand the value the retailer has in recommending products to the consumer,” she says. “They can really help people understand the benefits of these products and help sell them through. We’re here to help retailers.”
New products could be coming down the pike as well. Brown says the company is constantly exploring line extensions that will provide relief without harsh chemicals or antibiotics. “There is a huge demand,” she says. “There is a great deal of research and thought that goes into each product that is launched. These products have such a long track record in helping pets, and sales continue to be exceptionally strong. You can bet we’ll be capitalizing on this to provide more solutions.”
