Metrovac Hits Major Milestone

Metropolitan Vacuum Cleaner Co. Inc. (MetroVac) is celebrating its 80th year of manufacturing American-made vacuums and blowers.

“We are delighted to celebrate this milestone, and we would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the loyal customers and retail partners that have made our successes possible,” said Jules Stern, president and CEO of MetroVac. “When my parents started Metropolitan Vacuum Cleaner Co. 80 years ago, they had just $50 and an American dream. It is very rewarding to be living that dream and producing quality, durable products right here in the U.S. We are very proud of how far MetroVac has come.”

When MetroVac was founded in 1939 by Israel and Pearl Stern, their sole business was rebuilding and distributing vacuum cleaners. Their son, Jules Stern, joined the business on a full-time basis in 1951 and helped introduce the first 110-volt handheld vacuum cleaner in 1957, the first 12-volt automotive handheld vacuum cleaner that plugged into the cigarette lighter of cars in 1964 and the Metro Duo-Volt, a dual voltage hand vacuum designed to work in the home and the car in 1970. In 1968, in order to meet the production demand, MetroVac moved to a 32,000 square-foot facility in Suffern, N.Y.

Continuing the family tradition, Jules’ son, Kenneth Stern, joined the business as vice president of national sales in 1974 and his brother, David Stern, joined as vice president of marketing in 1984.

MetroVac still produces the housewares line, but has become an international manufacturer of air-moving products, with divisions in the automobile, motorcycle, pet, housewares, electronics and athletic industries.

As the company’s sales and lineup kept growing, it moved its manufacturing and headquarters to a 60,000 foot facility in Oakland, N.J. in 2013.

“Throughout our years of tremendous growth and expansion into multiple industries, we have stayed true to our mission of providing the highest quality, American-made products for our customers,” said Jules Stern. “We look forward to continuing this tradition and celebrating many more milestones with our customers. We are working on some exciting new endeavors and are hopeful for what the future has in store.”
