Most Popular Puppy Names in Each U.S. State

“Oh, what an adorable puppy! What’s his or her name?”

This common question is something brand-new puppy parents will receive as news about their new family member spreads. Picking out the perfect name for a new puppy can be a daunting task, but if pet parents are stuck and in need of inspiration, they can always consider the most popular names in their state or in the country.

Nationwide, a provider of pet health insurance, released a report detailing the most popular names for puppies in each U.S. state.

The report, conducted using a database with more than 750,000 insured pets, revealed the most popular name for dogs under two years old in the U.S. is Luna, and the second most popular name is Bella.

Luna and Bella are the top puppy names in 18 and 16 states, respectively. The most common puppy names throughout the U.S. in order of highest popularity are Luna, Bella, Charlie, Bailey and Cooper.

"'Bella' had been the most popular puppy name since the release of the Twilight franchise 15 years ago, but that has come to an end," said Carol McConnell, DVM, MBA, vice president and chief veterinary officer for Nationwide. "Our data shows that the next generation of pet owners are using different methods and references to determine a moniker for their furry family members."
