Lyndsey Myers, marketing director for Response Products, discusses how her company is addressing pets' health needs with supplements formulated with the highest-quality ingredients.
Pet Business: How did Response Products get started? What inspired the creation of the company?
Lyndsey Myers: Response Products began in 1998. As a pet owner herself, [owner] Dori Simonton recognized a need for a powerful joint-health supplement.
PB: What sets Response Products’ supplements apart from other brands on the market?
Myers: The first thing that sets us apart from most other supplements on the market is our main ingredient—cetyl myristoleate. Also, we strive to manufacture products with the highest-quality ingredients, which give our products a superior formula over our competition.
All of our products are made in a FDA-approved and cGMP facility. We are also proud audited members of the NASC [National Animal Supplement Council], which means our products are held to a higher standard of quality and guidelines. We take these extra steps to assure customer satisfaction and to provide a higher quality of life.
PB: How is the market for pet supplements—particularly those formulated to support healthy joints—performing? What is driving this performance?
Myers: All indications are that the pet supplement industry, including the market that caters to pet owners looking for joint health products, is very healthy. Studies have revealed that the majority of American households include a pet of some kind. In addition, those studies further indicate that many pet owners consider their dog, cat or horse more like a family member. And, these pet owners are very motivated to consciously look for products that will enrich the lives of their beloved dogs, cats or horses. Supplements such as those Response Products offers fit perfectly within that category.
PB: As a member of the National Animal Supplement Council, what does having the NASC seal on Response Products’ packaging mean to you?
Myers: Being members of the National Animal Supplement Council is a great source of pride for us. We have always held ourselves to a higher standard of quality and guidelines, but having the NASC seal on our products demonstrates our full commitment to providing products that are safe, effective and of the highest quality.
PB: What are some of the most common mistakes that pet stores make when selling supplements? How can they avoid/rectify those mistakes?
Myers: One of the most common mistakes that pet stores make when selling supplements is assuming that all are created equally. That’s absolutely not the case. In fact, the NASC seal on a product helps both customers and pet stores know that the product was made in a careful, safe manner and contains superior ingredients.
To take it further, another mistake pet stores can make is not being educated about a particular supplement. For example, our Cetyl M products contain a unique ingredient, cetyl myristoleate. Many may not have heard about cetyl myristoleate, or its potential to provide excellent joint health and function. So, they may just think Cetyl M is like any other joint-health products, but it in fact is so much more than that.
Education about the supplement, its ingredients, and even customers’ experiences with the product will all help pet stores assist their customers in making the right choice for their beloved pet.
PB: What are the newest and most exciting developments at Response Products?
Myers: Our newest and most exciting development is our brand new product, Cetyl M Regular Strength for Dogs. We have so many customers that feed Cetyl M for many years to their older dog, but what about their younger dog? We now have a fantastic solution for that. Along with joint-health support, Cetyl M Regular Strength for Dogs also helps maintain optimal health with immune-system support. We’ve seen some phenomenal results already with this new product.
PB: What does the future hold for Response Products and the pet supplement category?
Myers: In the past, we’ve been primarily an equine-based company. However, we’ve got big plans to expand further into the pet category, and we could not be more excited about that.
