Pets in the Classroom Co-promotes New Book Gator, Gator, Second Grader

Every child should experience the wonders and joy of a classroom pet—a hamster or gerbil, a little corn snake, or how about a gecko? Looking for something with a bit more bite, how about an alligator? A new soon-to-be-released science-based children’s book, Gator, Gator, Second Grader (Classroom Pet…Or Not?) will explain why the latter might not be such a great idea.

And in what seems to be a perfect marriage, The Pet Care Trust’s Pets in the Classroom program has teamed up with the book’s publisher—Little Five Star, a division of Five Star Publications, Inc.—for a cross-promotional partnership that is sure to fuel momentum of both book sales and the growth of the program.

Written by Conrad Storad and illustrated by Alex Lopez, the picture book provides students and teachers with a clever educational resource designed to introduce animals into a learning environment.

“We are delighted to have this opportunity to co-promote Mr.Storad’s wonderful book and our grant program,” said Steve King, executive director of The Pet Care Trust—the non-profit organization that established the Pets in the Classroom program, which gives grants to pre-k through eighth-grade classroom teachers to buy small pet and pet-care supplies for the classroom. “Teachers and the thousands of students who benefit from daily contact with a classroom pet will immediately identify with the characters in this story, and we hope that many more teachers will be inspired to adopt a classroom pet as a result of the book’s enjoyable exploration of the learning opportunities that interacting with animals at school can present.”

Five Star Publications is equally thrilled with the new partnership. “The wonderful thing about publishing this book,” said Linda F. Radke, Five Star’s founder and president, “is that it helps children understand which pets are appropriate in a classroom while at the same time teaches them how to care for and respect all creatures large and small.”

The book will be featured on The Pet Care Trust website, and Five Star is seeking sponsors to fund its goal of gifting a copy of Gator, Gator, Second Grader to every pre-K to fourth-grade Pets in the Classroom grant recipient this school year.
