Pet Bird Ownership Is On The Rise, Thanks To This New Holiday

The Bird Enjoyment & Advantage Koalition creates National Pet Bird Day to celebrate the joys and benefits of pet bird ownership, and in turn, support pet bird businesses around the nation.



Pet birds are making their way into more homes—and hearts—than ever before. To recognize the increased interest in companion birds and responsible pet bird ownership, the Bird Enjoyment & Advantage Koalition (BEAK) created the idea of a National Pet Bird Day. The first-ever holiday was observed on Sept. 17, 2019, and bird fans proudly participated across social media to celebrate the special bond, beauty and love that comes with owning a pet bird.

Before swan diving into the holiday, know that BEAK was formed in 2016 as a concentrated effort to grow bird ownership. In 2017, the Koalition quickly took flight after introducing its consumer-facing marketing campaign, myBird, as an effort to get people interested in pet bird ownership. The website,, features a fun and engaging quiz designed to pair respondents with the right bird species for their lifestyle. Since its inception, myBird has received more than 2.3 million page views and generated over 900,000 bird recommendations.

More recently, BEAK launched phase two of its consumer-facing educational website, With a whole host of notable features including a list of pet bird species and a detailed description of the birds’ temperament, lifespan and other care tips, and a fun blog geared to bird lovers of all ages, phase two of the website has helped countless consumers expand their bird knowledge, demonstrating that the myBird campaign has nowhere to fly but up.   

On National Pet Bird Day, pet bird owners were invited to share stories and photos of their birds using the hashtag #NationalPetBirdDay. As an added incentive to sharing, individuals who used the hashtag were entered to win an Amazon Echo. Influencers, like Tyler Rugge, helped generate buzz around the holiday on social media by encouraging fans to celebrate their pet birds. BEAK supporters participated by sharing graphics and memes from the National Pet Bird Day toolkit on their social media platforms.

BEAK partnered with Pet Partners, the nation’s leading organization registering therapy animals for animal-assisted interventions, on the holidy to host a sponsored therapy bird visit to a group of students with special needs in Arizona. Alongside his human handler, Buddy the macaw showed students the incredible emotional capability and intelligence inherent in pet birds. To demonstrate some of the responsibilities and mutual trust involved in having a bird as a companion, Buddy’s handler showed the students how he grooms Buddy and puts on his harness. They were also humored by a video of Buddy’s shower routine, as he tends to get a little vocal!

National Pet Bird Day encourages people to consider the responsibilities and commitment that come with having a companion bird. People were invited to take the myBird quiz to find their ideal pet bird match and check out myBird’s avian vet locator to help them discover nearby avian care facilities. Thanks to these helpful features, consumers see myBird as a trusted source for finding the right bird and locating essential resources to care for it.

In addition, the holiday serves as a way to continue the momentum of myBird’s social media efforts to reach bird lovers around the globe. Over the span of four years, the campaign has garnered over 200,000 bird fans on Facebook and over 14,000 followers on Instagram. With a strong presence in the digital space, myBird continues to soar to new heights and steal the hearts of bird lovers everywhere.
