Pet Owners' Holiday Spending Plans

Pet Business conducted an informal survey of more than 100 pet owners to learn about their 2019 holiday spending plans. â€‹With 94.2% of consumers planning to purchase a gift for their pet, heres the breakdown: 

 

What do you plan on purchasing for your pet?

  • Toys...................................59.2% 
  • Treats.................................35.9%
  • Apparel/All of the Above......4.9%

 

What catches your eye when holiday shopping for your pet?

  • Product Design..................48.5%
  • Displays.............................28.7% 
  • Packaging..........................16.8%
  • Other*...................................6.0% 

 

How much do you plan to spend on your pet for the holidays?

  • < $15.................................35.9%
  • $15 - $30...........................44.7%
  • $30 - $50...........................14.6%
  • > $50...................................4.9%

 

How much of your holiday budget will be spent on your pet?

  • ≤ 25 percent......................96.1%
  • 25 - 50 percent....................2.9%
  • 50 - 100 percent..................1.0%

92.2% of consumers said theyre going to keep their holiday budget the same as last year, while 4.9% will increase and the other 2.9% will decrease.

 

Where do you plan on shopping for your pet this holiday season?

  • In stores............................59.2%
  • Online................................40.8%

Those who are opting to shop online pointed to inconvenience and crowds as the biggest deterrents, while those who plan on shopping in stores said it helps them get into the holiday spirit and gives them the ability to see the quality of the product they’re buying. 

 

“I like being able to see/feel the toys myself,” said Aimee Vienneau, N.J. pet owner. “Sometimes I bring my dog to the store with me, too. Toby loves picking out his own toys!”
