What Pet Costumes Will Be Hot This Year?

Now that October is here, it is time to start thinking about Halloween. This year, U.S. consumers are expected to spend $9 billion on the spooky holiday according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey. But Americans aren’t just spending that money on candy and decorations, they’re also spending it on their pets.

Since today’s pets are thought of more as family than animals, it’s no surprise that pet costumes are on the rise. Almost 20 percent of shoppers plan to dress their four-legged friends, up this year compared to just 16 percent in 2017.

“One of the biggest trends this year is the growth of spending on pet costumes,” said Phil Rist, executive vice president of strategy for Prosper Insights & Analytics, a Worthington, Ohio-based market research firm. “Out of the 31.3 million Americans planning to dress their pets in costumes, millennials (25-34) are most likely to dress up their pets, the highest we have seen in the history of our surveys.”

The survey also revealed how consumers find the best costumes—both for themselves and for their pets. Approximately 35 percent use the internet as their primary source; 19 percent shop in person; 19 percent consult family and friends; 19 percent look on Pinterest; 16 percent turn to Facebook; 16 percent find inspiration in pop culture; and 15 percent go to YouTube.

According to the survey, the top 10 most popular pet costumes this year are:

1. Pumpkin (11%)

2. Hot Dog (7%)

3. Bumblebee (5%)

4. Devil (3.2%)

5. Cat (3.1%)

6. Dog (3.1%)

7. Lion (3.1%)

8. Star Wars Character (2.8%)

9. Superhero (2.7%)

10. Ghost (2.5%)
