Named in honor of America’s most cherished publisher and printer, titles that enter the Benjamin Franklin Awards are judged for their overall editorial and design excellence. The judging pool is comprised of 150 professionals, from 50 categories, and represents professionals across the industry spectrum, including: acquisition librarians; bookstore buyers; wholesalers and distributors; reviewers; editors; designers and artists.

More than 1,300 entrants were reviewed for excellence in 50 publishing categories, all released in 2009.  According to R.R. Bowker, the world's leading provider of bibliographic information, the number of traditional books published for 2009 is projected to be on par with the previous year (over 280,000 new titles and editions), while the total of traditional and non-traditional books published is projected to top 1 million units for the first time ever.

“Considering the enormous output of publishing during a difficult economic year, and the excellent work of so many competitors, these awards prove that consumers want and value books.  And they especially want books that improve the quality of their relationships with the pets in their lives,” said Christopher T. Reggio, publisher, TFH Publications.

In their 22nd year, the Benjamin Franklin Awards are presented by the Independent Book Publisher’s Association—the largest non-profit organization representing independent publishers. This year’s award ceremony was held May 24th at the Roosevelt Hotel in NYC, ahead of the start of Book Expo America (BEA).
