Puppy Bowl Practice Held at White House

Last night, President Obama gave his State of the Union Address, but the big news out of the White House occurred earlier in the day; images leaked of the First Lady and the First Pups, Bo and Sunny, hosting a pre-game workout for the upcoming Puppy Bowl. Bo, Sunny and First Lady Michelle Obama held the important puppy practice on the South Lawn of the White House back in October. Smart move pre-taping, Animal Planet—the participants would’ve been pupsicles if it was filmed it now.

The puppy players weren’t the only athletes in attendance; a dozen first and second grade students from Washington, D.C.'s Harriet Tubman Elementary School were also at the practice. The event fits in nicely with the First Lady’s “Let’s Move!” campaign, which promotes fitness and health. Mrs. Obama was obviously aware of this, and took the opportunity to stress the important benefits of getting outside each day to play with your pets to the students.

Bo and Sunny played a rollicking game of fetch—clearly an excellent way to strengthen their offense—and ran tire and tackle drills—to balance out the defense—with the Puppy Bowl players. All participants took the requisite water breaks and generally had a good time.

Puppy Bowl X will air on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 2) on Animal Planet. All of the puppies playing the game will be available for adoption. Maybe one of the parents of the children who participated in the practice will be nice enough to take one home, or perhaps Sonny and Bo will recruit a new player for their team.
