Muttbombing Away

There are so many wonderful volunteer organizations and inspiring individuals working to save domestic animals these days. Social media is a powerful tool in these situations; in order to stand out from the pack, each person or group must come up with something clever to make their cause the most memorable.

Back in February, we told you about Susie’s Senior Dogs, a Facebook page dedicated to helping senior dogs around the country get adopted. Since then, the page has gone global and increased its followers by about 50 percent to over 149,000. New adoption posts are popping up on the page regularly, and it’s all because of social media.

Now we’d like to introduce you to the newest adoption aid: #Muttbombing. Muttbombing is a clever initiative created by Dallas Pets Alive! (DPA!) whose “mission is to promote and provide the resources, education and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals.” Using Instagram as their social medium of choice, DPA! takes pre-existing selfies (preferably of the celebrity variety) and Photoshops images of dogs in need of adoption into them. The captions give a little information about the pup pictured and end with a call to action sending people to the Muttbombing website for more information on fostering or adopting.

So far, reality TV personalities and celebrities Courtney Kerr, Kim Kardashian, and Jimmy Fallon have been muttbombed. DPA! has also #Muttbombed one of the most memed male actors out there, Ryan Gosling. The web went wild for the new trend and media outlets like The Huffington Post, TIME, and USA Today have all covered it on their websites. Since the craze has caught on, the DPA! crew is now offering to #muttbomb your friends if you email them your friend’s Instagram account along with a personal message. So, go on, get creative for a good cause. #Muttbombs away!
